EDITOR’S NOTE:

As a follow-up to last year’s conference on human trafficking, see update below by Michael Sullivan from the Michigan Attorney General’s office.

"In January of 2017, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette charged 19-year old Tremaine Woodall of Warren, with two counts of Human Trafficking – Recruiting a Minor for Commercial Sexual Activity, and two counts of Pandering, for sex trafficking a 17 year-old and attempting to sex traffic a 16-year old. Woodall is awaiting trial. With respect to legislation, recently the Attorney General’s Office supported the passage of House Bill 4219 which allows human trafficking victims to have their criminal records dismissed. The Attorney General’s Office also provides numerous trainings each year across Michigan to professionals – including law enforcement, victim service providers and the general public on the topic of Human Trafficking. Finally, the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission which is housed within the Attorney General’s Office and chaired by Assistant Attorney General Kelly Carter is working on several initiatives including development of a human trafficking training video for health professionals, in conjunction with the Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County Medical Societies."
